The essential element in Levergneux’s new exhibition, Representation, is the passage of time. By pairing two separate pieces, Equinox (1999-2007) and Out of the Studio (2012), the artist presents time as she’s grown to know it, on the duo levels of micro- and macro-time. The latest work portrays micro-time: four-second weekly segments that span 52 weeks. Levergneux got herself ‘out of the studio’ to seek inspiration to compile a strictly-framed series of flip books. The earlier piece, Equinox, features macro-time: a detailed diary, methodically recorded over the course of nine years, consisting of daily photographic self portraits as well as a log of activities and thoughts.

Out of the Studio explores the four basic elements and presents them as fleeting moments or timeslices. Each of the 52 flip books in this series captures four seconds of a day, which depict various seasons and echo the artist’s state of mind during 2012.

Equinox is a simple journal based on the artist’s observations of the everyday. Utilizing an archival format, each of the nine books unfold to reveal 365 days of the artist’s meticulously recorded life. The albums explore not only the repetitiveness of quotidian life, but the rigors of record keeping, and, ultimately, reveal a day subjectively encapsulated — a memory.

A book, to Levergneux, always tells a story. Whether it’s something abstract or concrete, something visual, verbal, or a combination of these things. A book is a time-based medium; it is interactive, involves sequence, and the narrative can only be absorbed through the investment of time. That being said, each viewer interacts with these books in a unique and dynamic way, bringing their own individual interpretations to the reading.
